Yes, believe it or not, the great D&L Revision Project is finally, completely, done! I've already deleted the old versions from FF.net and uploaded the new ones; and will update the versions at Fiction Alley and The Sugar Quill as soon as I figure out how they want me to go about it. (
heidi8, didn't you say you wanted me to let you know before I submitted the new version to FA?)
In the meantime, you can find the complete revised text of all three D&L stories here:
The Potions Master's Apprentice
Personal Risks
If We Survive
And my deepest and most heartfelt thanks to all the people who helped me with this project. It was a lot of work, and a bit nutty of me to take the time to do it in the first place, but I'm glad I did it. I think the stories have been significantly improved in the re-editing process, not only in terms of their canonicity but in terms of characterization (Snape's especially, but also Maud's in the first story), plot, and style. I had the chance to fix some Flints that had been annoying me, and provide more plausible explanations and rationales for details that tripped some readers up in the first version (i.e. how likely is it that a school which has been in operation for several centuries would have no rules about teacher-student fraternization? All together, now: NOT.)
I was also pleased by how readily many of the facts we learned and people we encountered in OotP fit into the framework of D&L (Umbridge, for instance) and how often I seemed to have unconsciously anticipated things JKR was going to introduce in Book 5 (like the wizard at the Quidditch semi-final in Chapter Four wearing "what looked like a large stuffed magpie" on his head -- shades of Luna Lovegood!). So in the end, this revision really wasn't half as much work as it might have been, and making the changes turned out to be much more fun than drudgery.
Whether I'll get any new readers out of this, or whether anyone who disliked the first version will be inclined to give the revision a try, I don't know. But it doesn't really matter, either -- I didn't really do it for anybody's satisfaction but my own. If other people turn out to enjoy it as well, that's gravy. :)
