Yes, believe it or not, the great D&L Revision Project is finally, completely, done! I've already deleted the old versions from FF.net and uploaded the new ones; and will update the versions at Fiction Alley and The Sugar Quill as soon as I figure out how they want me to go about it. ([livejournal.com profile] heidi8, didn't you say you wanted me to let you know before I submitted the new version to FA?)

In the meantime, you can find the complete revised text of all three D&L stories here:

  • The Potions Master's Apprentice
  • Personal Risks
  • If We Survive

And my deepest and most heartfelt thanks to all the people who helped me with this project. It was a lot of work, and a bit nutty of me to take the time to do it in the first place, but I'm glad I did it. I think the stories have been significantly improved in the re-editing process, not only in terms of their canonicity but in terms of characterization (Snape's especially, but also Maud's in the first story), plot, and style. I had the chance to fix some Flints that had been annoying me, and provide more plausible explanations and rationales for details that tripped some readers up in the first version (i.e. how likely is it that a school which has been in operation for several centuries would have no rules about teacher-student fraternization? All together, now: NOT.)

I was also pleased by how readily many of the facts we learned and people we encountered in OotP fit into the framework of D&L (Umbridge, for instance) and how often I seemed to have unconsciously anticipated things JKR was going to introduce in Book 5 (like the wizard at the Quidditch semi-final in Chapter Four wearing "what looked like a large stuffed magpie" on his head -- shades of Luna Lovegood!). So in the end, this revision really wasn't half as much work as it might have been, and making the changes turned out to be much more fun than drudgery.

Whether I'll get any new readers out of this, or whether anyone who disliked the first version will be inclined to give the revision a try, I don't know. But it doesn't really matter, either -- I didn't really do it for anybody's satisfaction but my own. If other people turn out to enjoy it as well, that's gravy. :)

Congratulations, Rebecca! I know I joined the "revisions" list and never said anything, but that was because I was just amazed that you could actually make this fic *better*! :-)

    You did a great job!

I've asked [Unknown site tag] to tell me if he wants to use your fic to test the conversion system and he or I will let you know early this week.

Congrats, Rebecca, on the completed revisions (not that the stories were not excellent as they were, mind you) and I do love the new Snape and Maud icon.

What a pleasure to read these stories again--with the revisions, it's *almost* like having the first read once more. Discoveries, yes, but also the familiar pleasures. I LOL'd to once again encounter Dumbledore's "time to inspect the insides of my eyelids," and Oooooooh, the restaurant scene with Snape in his Muggle disguise as "Stephen Soames." Makes my toes curl, that does.

Muriel remains as hateful as ever, yet ultimately pitiable. Oh, and you're not the only person who "wuvs me some Alastor"! Your version is as much of a treat as I remember, and even as I sit here typing, I envision Snape calling upon him to ask permission, and giving the oath to remain a gentleman . . . and I'm snickering. I can't help it.

All of which makes me wonder how the current fic is going. "Please, Ma'am, I want some more!" 8-)

Thanks, Mary Anne. You're very kind. :)

All of which makes me wonder how the current fic is going.

Which "current fic" did you mean, the Alias/HP crossover or the Snapelets story? Not that it matters: in either case the answer is "not very well at present, which is to say, not at all," because I'm rather tired and overwhelmed with RL stuff at the moment. But perhaps next week one of my narrators will be willing to speak to me again...

Actually, what I meant was the Snapelets fic (that Margot worries me, she really does), but hey, any new fic from you is an event. Sorry that RL is such a drain right now. Reality, bleah. Filthy stuff. I try never to touch it unless absolutely necessary. ;-)

Congratulations on finishing it! I think the final project is fabulous, and it amazes me how well it fits in with the canon of OotP. Just goes to show you've got an excellent feel for canon!

I know I probably didn't help that much, but I really enjoyed all the discussion on the list and finding out amusing little tidbits about canon-osity. Is that a word?

And what's this about a Snapelets fic? How did I miss this, is there anything available currently?

Ooh, shiny! Well, I'm off to marvel at the stories; I loved them before the revision, and from what I've seen of the stories post-revision, I'm going to love them even more.

PS) By the way? You've made me love Dr Who. And I hadn't even heard about that before I found your *tongue in mouth while attempting to spell it* Syneasthesia Trilogy. You Are Evil. I Am Quite Possibly In Love. I'm just saying.

Yay! *dances* Another convert! Now if only the new BBC series turns out to be good...

Seriously, thank you very much indeed.

I Am Quite Possibly In Love.

With WHO in general, or just the Doctor (and if so, which one)?

Weeeeel... the eleventh Doctor. You just wrote him so *cute*. And I love Mozart, so...

Oh, hell, which girl wouldn't want someone who could make her hear music?
