"What?" Snape had learnt to regard that tone with great wariness, especially at breakfast time.
"It's just that, well, I was going for a swim this morning. In the lake."
"In the lake. Of course."
Snape wondered if McGonagall would object to his strangling her new Divination teacher. Probably. It had taken her such a long time to find someone who was both sane and sober. Although Lovegood only fulfilled half the criteria. In any case, he was still in an uneasy position, and if he started murdering his co-workers again, people would talk.
"Well, while I was underwater, I couldn't help but notice an odd growth on the rocks in the deeper waters. Oh yes, I borrowed some Gillyweed from your stores. I meant to mention it at the time, but it completely slipped my mind, you see, I got talking to Professor Flitwick about the likelihood of the Ministry using Imperius to control the Board of Governors--"
With difficulty, Snape said, "What about this odd growth on the rocks?"
"Oh yes. Well. I was thinking about it, and it really looks a bit ominous. I'm very concerned that we might be faced with an outbreak of bone-eating snotflowers."
"'Bone-eating snotflowers'."
"Yes," she said earnestly. "They'd be very bad for the giant squid, you know. To say nothing of the Gryffindor diving team."
"Of course," said Snape. "One wouldn't want the Gryffindor diving team to meet with any mishap."
"No indeed," said Luna. "More coffee, Professor Snape?"
