Quick, Doctor Who fans, what's wrong with this picture?

(And no, it's not that the Doctor isn't wearing a hat and/or a visibly quirky costume, although I am sure there have been any number of fannish meltdowns over this since the first promo pics of the new series were released... I really can't get worked up about it myself, though.)

P.S. Sorry, Liz. Again.

He's grabbing her THIGH????

The heck with the costume! What's that Doctor doing?

Hee. I love how everybody twigged onto this instantly.

I think the pose is supposed to look protective -- "Get behind me, Rose, I'll deal with this Dalek" -- but the thigh grab does seem a little much. :)

Dude, I'm not even a Doctor Who fan yet, but even I know that the thigh-grab should definitely raise an eyebrow.

Also: Is it just me, or does that robot-thing have a toilet pluger as an arm?

Dude. I thought that was a plunger too. Since when are there Dalek plumbers?

Maybe the Daleks couldn't hack it as super-evil villains and had to take up a day job.

But the real question is, does it have a plumber's crack?

Of course it's a plunger. This is BBC props we're talking about.

LOL! That was my first thought, too.

It's a useful tool, especially if you're about to spend 936 years in a sewer.

I think a pair of rubber boots might be more useful for 936 years in a sewer, but hey, whatever works for the Daleks.

Good one. It's comforting to know that I have at least two or three other anoraks on my list to make obscure Who jokes with. :D

Ahem... I believe you are referring to the new series designers' laudible faithfulness one of the essential defining characteristics of the original classic 1963 design by Mr Raymond P. Cusick, much loved and drawn on many school exercise books for over four decades!

Whoopeee!! A whole new generation are gonna get to make all the plumber jokes!!!! [BOUNCE, BOUNCE] =:o>

Hee! I can just see Mary Whitehouse (if she's still alive) having an apopleptic fit.

The funny thing is, the first time I saw the pic I didn't even notice. I'm sure I would have gone on not noticing forever had I not decided to give it a second look...

Daleks always have toilet plungers as arms. In 1964 that was as big as the BBC budget got.

And I saw the very first episodes, live. With William Hartnell as the Doc.

It's the thigh clutching that upsets me.

Teh Doc nevah gets jiggy with his assistants, indeed anyone.

*gets ready to write letter of complaint to The Times:

Sir,

It is an absolute disgrace, etc, etc,....*

LOL. This is all so fascinating.

And the characters took a plunger-armed robot creature seriously as a force of evil?

So did the audience.

"Exterminate" (ably imitated by the means of holding one's nose and intoning adenoidally) was a national catch phrase.

Probably it helped that it was 1964. SFX was shall we say, sketchy in those days.

We made our own entertainment... the kids of today... don't know when they are well off...

Well, given that the new series is being made by Real Lifelong WhoFans with some pretty impressive credentials, and I absolutely love at least two of the writers on the new series, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt -- for now. I think that if anything they're going to go the UST route, and that's practically canonical (I mean, the Fourth Doctor and Romana, or even the Third Doctor and Jo, used to flirt like anything). I really can't see them having the Doctor and Rose "get jiggy" (hee!).

On the other hand, some pretty weird things have happened to and with the Doctor in the BBC Who novels written since the show went off the air, so you never know...

If, as it appears, he's trying to grab her butt, I think he'd have more success if he let her walk into the room full of nasty aliens ahead of him...

From: [identity profile] reveilles.livejournal.com
In the rough order in which I noticed them:
  1. He's grabbing her THIGH?!?
  2. Why does he look so generically skanky? Minus the hat is okay. But why does his clothing look like he took his nibs from Tom Cruise and Ethan Hawke and the rest of the male actor parade? One of the things I loved about the Doctor was that his sense of fashion was entirely his own. He didn't quite look like he fit in, sort of like he was from some other century of his own making that might have been sort of related to ours, but wasn't quite. Or he just looked outrageously off. He didn't look like Cool Male Fashion Parade Bimbo.
  3. Making him look sexy destroys his sexiness entirely. Why don't they realize that a large part of his appeal is that he is very intelligent, a slightly quirky dresser, and not entirely aware of his own sex appeal? If he wears clingy skank shirts under a leather jacket, he looks like every other male character on television who's trying to look sexy WITH EXACTLY THE SAME CLOTHES. BOOOOR-ing. I guess this point is just an extension of the previous one...
  4. What's up with the blonde Botox-infused Companion? Could she be any more boring? She looks generic, not interesting, funny, or intelligent in her own right. Are those dark roots? Gasp. :)
On the other hand, I like how the Dalek has a nice new golden sheen to it. :)

I know what you mean re the Doctor's look -- I had the same initial shocked reaction as well -- and I can't say that the look of the new companion appealed that much to me at first either. But upon consideration, I think that the essence of the Doctor isn't in his clothing, but in the way he behaves. If Eccleston can capture that ineffable Doctorish essence with his portrayal, I'll stop worrying about the rest of it. The few snippets of spoilers I've heard about the new show leave me fairly confident that the Ninth Doctor is just as blissfully unconscious of/indifferent to his sexuality as the other Doctors have been. Rose (the new companion) may not be so indifferent, but then, there have been any number of companions who seemed to have a crush on the Doctor in the past, so that doesn't bother me. :)

Speaking of Billie Piper, there was a big fiasco that blew up when the casting for the new companion was announced, with a bunch of indignant fans describing her as "trailer trash" or words to that effect. But again, while I might not care much for the look at first glance, I'll wait and see what I think of her performance.

Ah yes, you're right. I'm judging her by her appearance. She might turn out to be great. :)

Maybe I'm just letting my large-thighed brunette bitterness have a voice, and I shouldn't. :)

I hope this isn't a sign of the whole look of the show. If it's just one bad promo shot, it'll be okay. There are always some real clunkers when the show is just starting out and they haven't established a distinctive look yet.

The covers of the 4-or-so tie-in books I've seen being promoted so far are "playing it safe" with the photographic material, recycling pictures from the same photo session. The crew are trying very hard not to let too many images from the series itself get out yet.

Of course, the result is a (hopefully!) splendid TV show being promoted via a clutch of really naff-looking book covers... =:o{

Of course, cross-referencing another discussion (http://www.livejournal.com/users/pbristow/135299.html), he may just be confused about comparisons between the latter seasons of the original show and pantomime, and how exactly that thigh-slapping thing is supposed to work... =:o}

I can't even see the pictures - comes up as little red Xs.

And I can think of One or Two doctors who got it on with their assistants. And you're responsible for one of them ;)

Humph! I'll have you know that the Eleventh Doctor would never be so crass as to grab his companion's thigh in public. :D

Re the picture, if it still won't work for you, try going here (http://www.gallifreyone.com/newstv.php), scroll down the page a screen or two to the entry about "Monsters and Villains" and click on the small book cover shown there.

Never mind the grope, I'm still more worried about the presence of Billie Piper. I still spend whole days with her songs in my head...

I can see I'm going to have to find a really horrific icon in retaliation...
