...what's this about a Snapelets fic? How did I miss this, is there anything available currently?

Which made me realize that I've never really posted a coherent message about this particular WiP, I've just gone on merrily assuming people knew about it. But unless you've been following my blog as well as my LJ for quite some time, you probably don't. So, here's the scoop.

Calling this story "the Snapelets fic" is heavily tongue-in-cheek: it makes it sound like a fluffy little piece where Snape and Maud look benignly at their precocious but adorable kids, and make clucking noises over all the naughty but clever things those children have been up to lately. Fortunately for those of my readers not equipped with strong stomachs, or otherwise inclined to seek out fics drenched in syrup, I'm not writing anything of the sort. In fact, it's going to be fairly grim in parts, as those of you who have read Cry might have begun to suspect.

The structure of this story is going to be a bit different from anything else I've written so far: what I'm doing is writing up scenes in pretty much random order, as they occur to me, and then I'm going to piece them together and add connective tissue as necessary. The story covers a significant period of time -- about fifteen years, possibly more -- so I'm just dipping into the Snape family history here and there where it relates to the main plot. That plot being, as it happens, Margot Snape's development from a shrewd and observant young woman into a calculating, iron-willed Evil Overlady who makes Voldemort look, well, about as stupid as he actually was. :)

Anyway, so far I've written four scenes that are publicly available, though a couple of them (especially the first) are noticeably incomplete, and all are sure to be revised when I've got more of the story written. But you can get an idea of what I'm doing by looking at these:

  • The Discovery. While camping in the countryside near his mother's childhood home, ten-year-old Malcolm Snape finds an artifact amid the ruins.
  • The Reunion. At the Hogwarts school reunion, a twentysomething Malcolm witnesses the formation of a dangerous friendship between his sister Margot and a Most Unsuitable Person.
  • The Confrontation. Shortly after the preceding incident, Geoff Weasley demands to know the truth about Margot and her new partner in potential crime, with surprising and unfortunate results.
  • The Library. Near the end of his first year at Hogwarts, Malcolm agonizes over his Potions grade. Fifteen-year-old Margot critiques Voldemort, and expounds on how a Real Leader would operate. Albion, the Snape family's resident Quidditch star, Head Boy, and all-around model of Good Form, is not impressed.

Current scenes in progress include a Snape family dinner party (which I am indebted to [livejournal.com profile] lizbee for suggesting), and a scene very close to the end of the fic in which Geoff's idea of Something Wonderful turns out to be a bad, bad thing for all concerned. There's also a peripherally connected story called "Golden Boy" which I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] lizbee's birthday, since she's a Mad Albion Fangirl. If you've read the other available scenes and decide you'd like to see that one, I'll send the link on request...

O.K. Sorry to use this innocuous post to vent--but I am REALLY getting tired of TV programs I like messing up people's lives and making the characters into real JERKS in order to keep up the UST. I have appreciated JAG (while not being a fan-girl like my lovely daughter) but I can hardly stand to watch this season as Mac goes all weird again on Harm. And in Alias--if Syndey sits in the dark and makes one more poor unsuspecting male fall madly in love with her I will THROW UP! Have I yelled enough? ;-) If it wasn't for SpyDaddy, I would probably stop watching. And they'll probably throw in some poor smuck to make goo-goo eyes at him soon.

Sorry, this is probably my "wrong-side of 40" age speaking, but I find it increasingly hard to empathize with women who have a great love of the week (and I've never really liked it in men either).

I'm confused. Who's falling in love with Sydney, or vice versa, who wasn't already smitten with her as of last season? I agree she's got a daunting number of would-be suitors in the queue, but then, she always did. If anything, the number of WBS's has gone down this season, now that Vaughn's married and Marshall's involved with Carrie...

Anyway, other than that very stupid one-shot in the first season with her old boyfriend who turned out to be a contract killer, I can't think of anybody besides Vaughn that Sydney's actually had a romance with. So the "great love of the week" thing is confusing me.

Not that I'm a big Syd Defender or anything. Jack/Irina is still my true OTP -- even I have to admit that Syd/Weiss is a long shot.

Am also curious about Albion fic -- after all, he's the only Snape sibling who hasn't gotten a scene from his perspective in the bits you've put out so far, and between that and his Golden Boy persona he's probably the least defined.

(Given a choice, I think I'd be a mad Malcolm fangirl. I mean, how can you not love a guy with what's clearly inherited talent for being Indiana Jones plus magic and minus the clingy babe of the week?)

Actually, Margot hasn't had a scene from her perspective either -- Malcolm is the sole POV for this fic. It's just that Margot tends to take over the action whenever I let her onstage. :)

As for Malcolm, I agree -- he's the gem of the bunch. I really need to finish this dinner party scene, which will hopefully give him a chance to come more to the forefront for a change.

Sending you the URL for the Albion fic now...

I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed the revised version of "The Potion Master's Apprentice" this afternoon. I didn't do a side-by-side comparison with the original, but this seemed to have a smoother, more confident flow to it. :) The OotP touches were also fun to pick up on.

(Now that I sound like a kiss-up, do you mind if I friend you?) ;)

I would dearly love to read the Albion fic. You know if it's related to Snape at all and you wrote it, I want to read it ;)

"You know if it's related to Snape at all and you wrote it, I want to read it." Yes, that about sums it up for me, except I also like reading stuff of yours that has nothing to do with Snape. Ahhhh, those Doctor fics.

I like the description of Margot as an "Evil Overlady" which, even as it makes me smile, gives me a distinct chill. That girl scares me already with what little I've seen of her. And I can't help wondering how Snape is going to react to his daughter going "dark" after all he and Maud have been through . . . oh, dear, this is going to be a bumpy read! *fastening seat belt*

For any other author, it would be quite sad for me to become a mad fangirl of EVERY MALE in her fic. However, you're you (and have that indefinable melt-worthy-male-writing talent), and I feel much better about myself than I would have.

Since Albion and Malcolm have already been snapped up by the squeeing masses and Margot has other plans, can I have Geoff?

*slings him over shoulder and carts him away, whistling*

LOL. Well, he did grow up rather nicely... the trick is that you'd have to pry his cold dead hands off of Margot. Like George said to Maud in PR, Weasleys aren't very good about accepting defeat. :)
