I have just read the ARC of Laurie R. King's latest Russell/Holmes adventure, The Game. The one that's a follow-up to Rudyard Kipling's Kim. The one that won't be published until March 2, 2004. That one.

And it absolutely rocks. I ate up every syllable. I laughed out loud, I gasped in shock, I grinned like an idiot when I realized my leg had been pulled in several different directions. I wrote Laurie a totally incoherent letter burbling over how much I enjoyed it.

But now I want to discuss it with somebody and I can't! Wah!

That is just so cool. :-)

Would it be a good thing to read Kim first? I definitely don't have any objection to reading an extra book!

Is it best to read Laurie R. King's books in the sequence they came out in? I haven't gotten started on her yet because I haven't been able to catch Book 1 in the library yet.

I think that you definitely need to read Beekeeper's Apprentice first, followed by Monstrous Regiment of Women. After that, IMO, it's negotiable. I hope you catch book one in the library soon!

Er, you could send the ARC around to like-minded and discreet distant acquaintances?

... well, it was worth a shot. ;)

Cool!

That sounds great! Can you share when in the Russel timeline this takes place?

1924, and you do know that I'm going to mail it to you* as soon as Janna's done reading it, so you can read it and bring it back with you when you visit in December, right? Just in case you hadn't figured that out already.

*Sorry, I wish I could share it with all of you, but [livejournal.com profile] avarill and I actually met on account of our mutual enthusiasm for BEEK and spent ridiculous amounts of time discussing it before the second book came out, so she's got dibs. But, you know, they're auctioning off ARCs of The Game right now on eBay...

You are evil, teasing us like that. But hey, it's coming out two days before my birthday! Now I know what I'll be getting myself. :-)

Yes! it's coming out near my birthday too! I think I will spend my birthday afternoon with Homes, Russel, a pot of tea and perhaps a scone...

Getting back to reality, how would you compare The game to Justice Hall? Better, worse, or so different that comparisons don't work?

See my answer to that question here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/synaesthete7/65204.html?thread=432820#t432820).

And the tea and scones sound lovely. Can I come?

But of course! My son still has all his Thomas videos in his closet, perhaps that would entertain all three boys...:)

Dear Rebecca You Beastly Woman,

I am sincerely happy for you and glad you enjoyed the book but I'm afraid I just can't drum up much sympathy for you present situation.

I can't wait now. It was hard to wait before, but now the waiting will be worse after reading that review! ARGH! :) Do we need to read "Kim" before reading this one? The Beekeeper's list is going to be fun reading for the next day or so {G}

Sorry. That phrased popped into my head as I thought about how we might convince you to share. I figured everyone else could form a hit squad of some sort, get the book from you, and then fight amongst ourselves until there was only one left, and the victor would read the book. And by victor, I mean me. =)

If there were a scale of best to worst books in the MH series, where would you place this one?

I am now very entertained by the idea of a GAME deathmatch. I'm sure Laurie would be flattered that her fans are so eager to read this book. :)

The answer to that is here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/synaesthete7/65204.html?thread=432820#t432820).

I just thought I've a problem w/ the GAME deathmatch, though. If we all die, how are we suppose to buy our own books?

Then again, if we're all on our deathbed, and our last wish is to read GAME, will you then show it to us? =)

I don't think I have ever been more jealous in my life. *sulk*

I need to join the line of people asking, is it a good idea to read Kim first?

You know, I really didn't want to say this. I feel extremely crass and if possible even more immature. But there is no other way to express my feelings on the matter.

YOU LUCKY, LUCKY BITCH!!!

So I can gauge things properly... what did you think of Justice Hall?

I remember vaguely reading responses that people were not all that happy with it, then when I finally got it, I liekd it quite a bit. The lack of the two of them together didn't bother nearly as much as it did other people apparently.

However, if you thought it was that good, it's probably not an issue at all what I thought of Justice Hall.

Well, for my part, I absolutely loved JUST when I read the ARC, and was shocked to discover how few other people felt the same way once it was published. However, I love GAME even more -- in fact I'd say it's just become my second-favorite book of the series, after BEEK -- and I think that the problems other fans saw in JUST are not going to bother them in this book.

For whatever that's worth... :)
