I was just poking my nose in at some online listings for Rebel, and then I noticed at the top of the Waterstones page for the book:

10+ copies in stock.

What? says I. It is not supposed to be available until 7 January! But then I checked out the stock availability in the physical Waterstones stores.

IT IS OUT THERE, PEOPLE.

Uh, I hope you like it?

I guess there's always ordering online, but the shipping's gotta be a killer.

Alas!

I've already pre-ordered it from bookdepository.co.uk, where shipping is free (hooray!), but that does not let me have it now.

Presumably ordering from Waterstones would get it shipped now, but... yeah.

Sweet cuppin' cakes -- on bookdepository.co.uk it's under $5 AND free shipping? Man, that's crazy. Thanks for the tip-off! I am so there.

But quite expensive, and shipping times still come into play.

Hee! I am such a fan of bookdepository! They are my go-to site for not-printed-in-the-US books (because Amazon.co.uk only pretends to be cheap).

WOW! Thanks for the tip on bookdepository - I'm putting in my order now! I just hope it arrives before I leave for my work trip at the end of January.

I can't guaranteee that it will, but I've received books from them within a week of placing the order. On the other hand, it was March, so various postal systems weren't trying to catch up with Christmas-related post. Also, the books weren't brand-new/just printed. But the book has two to three weeks to get to you, which I can see happening.

Any idea when it'll be coming out in the US?

Pub date for WAYFARER in the US is June 22nd, 2010.

That's... odd, and particularly ironic given how long it took them to receive copies of Wrath of the Lemming Men earlier in the year. I guess they wanted to give it a run at some Christmas sales, but I've not noticed it in a Waterstones yet. I'll check the children's bookshop on my street if I get a chance before I go home for Christmas...

Oh, brilliant! They should have it in Irish bookshops too then - huzzah! **Happy dances**

Mazel tov!

You must be over-the-moon excited.

And we, of course, are thrilled. Can't wait to see it on bookshelves in the U.S.!

I'm looking forward to holding a copy in my hands in January! 2009 (kind of) began with KNIFE, 2010 will too - and then there will be moooore. :D

Dang it, it's still on pre-order at Book Depository. I still has to wait!

Mebbe Waterstones is confuzzled? W.H. Smith still lists the book as being for pre-order... but then, they also still list Brian Froud as my co-author, which is even more confuzzling.

Hopefully I'll find out soon whether anybody's spotting the books in actual stores... or whether they're just piled up in the stockroom somewhere.

Just thought I'd let you know that I bought Rebel from WH Smith today, but it was nowhere to be found in Waterstones. This is probably down to my local Waterstones having a negligible YA section rather than paying attention to release dates, though.
I'm planning on curling up with Rebel this afternoon-- it looks amazing. :)

Oh, thank you! Not only for buying REBEL, but for being the first person to report seeing it in a real store. :D I hope you enjoy it!

Hurrah! Though I won't be able to see it until it comes out in the US... Poo.

In other news, I just bought Faery Rebels for my niece's Christmas present! I'm super excited for her to read it.

Embargo!

I went in to three bookshops in the city centre (Dublin), including Waterstone's, yesterday and no Rebel to be found. Today I tried one in Dun Laoghaire (the shop which had a window devoted to Knife last year) and asked when I didn't see it. The woman very confidently marched over to the Just Published table, then to YA, muttering about where it could have got to as she went. But when she looked it up, she said it was marked as 'Embargoed' by the distributors. She further explained that this was a Very Good Thing, and due to the success of Knife last year, so the publishers are protecting it by not allowing shops to sell it before the official release date!

If the shops in the UK are showing real stock it may be different over here, but anyway, the very sad thing for me (no book to bring home now was said to be a VGT for you, so thought I'd pass it on. With good wishes for a wonderful Christmas.

Wow! I'm amazed to hear that, because I've had 2-3 people from England report that they'd already bought a copy from their local WH Smiths. Maybe the English booksellers are being naughty?

I am sorry to have led you on -- but yay for Very Good Things, and thanks for telling me!

I finished Rebel last night - excellent :-) Bought it for my other half for Christmas (I spotted it in Waterstone's while shopping and cancelled my Amazon order to get my hands on it quicker!); he read it Christmas Day and I got it yesterday. Darker than the first book, I thought, and with lots more development of the faery world - I won't say much for fear of spoilering. It shouldn't be out yet, no, but I guess the booksellers wanted the Christmas trade?

Wow, quick readers! Thanks so much for letting me know that you enjoyed it -- I'm very glad to hear it. REBEL is indeed different from KNIFE in many respects and I've found already that some people don't like that, so I'm glad to hear that it worked for you!

According to waterstones they have completely shipped my order. Now I just have to wait for it to arrive in the States.
