...that some HP fans, fed up with the text of the US editions of the books being messed around with, are choosing to order the British editions from Amazon UK instead. This is fine if you really want to order all the way from the UK, but there's a much simpler and probably cheaper method --

Just order them from Canada. Our editions have the same text as the UK editions (not the US ones), and if you preorder from either Amazon.ca or Chapters Indigo, they'll ship it to you by June 21st.

This public service announcement has been brought to you by an annoyingly smug Canadian.

Good tip - thanks! I'm really fond of the GrandPre art, and all my Potter books are US editions, so I'll keep up tradition for OotP (it's already pre-ordered, anyway). But it's worth considering ordering the previous paperbacks from amazon.ca so I can have the original wording -- Weasley jumpers, sherbet lemon and all. :)

O Canada

Well, you smug Canadians told me a little bit late! Already pre-ordered and grimly holding my ground by the time somebody pointed this out.

Tsk. Too too retiring, you lot. ;)

You could always cancel your UK preorder and do another preorder with the Canadian version of Amazon... it's never "too late" until they start shipping.

I'm just sayin'. :)

Heh.

I've been getting the US hardcovers for my brother and the UK paperbacks for myself, so I don't need to order the UK/Canadian version just yet. Besides, I'd rather wait until the last book is published so that I can get #5-7 in one box set to match the set I have for #1-4. ;D

You've every right to be smug. It is exceedingly annoying that they feel the need to excise the Britishisms from the American editions. The minute I found out about it, I ordered the whole set from Canada, as you so wisely suggest. For OotP, we've ordered both editions, which keeps both sets intact AND has the added advantage of keeping us from divorcing over who gets to read the book first. (I've already claimed the Canadian version). Yes, we look a little silly with an entire row of duplicate Harry Potters on our bookshelf...

You sure they're not doing these things in queues? First ordered, first shipped?

I wouldn't say that the American versions have been 'messed around with' Certain sections that are different in the US version are due to both publisers getting a manuscript and editing it. But true, is it really necessary to take out the Britishisms. The book is obviously set in Britain so the language could have stayed intact.

Last I checked, Amazon and Chapters both were claiming they'd ship your order as soon as the books came in. I suppose that might have changed in the interim -- I did order back in January -- but I wouldn't be surprised if it hadn't changed, either... *goes to look*

Yep, they're offering "release date delivery to your door at no additional cost" on both sites.

Well, that's really what I meant by "messed around with". When I hear complaints from American HP fans it's usually that they never realized how much fun they were missing with those Britishisms...

I love the way that starkers means something completely different in Australia.
