'Cos there be some good reading (and viewing) out there at the moment...

[livejournal.com profile] penwiper26 has started a post-Locked Rooms (i.e. spoilery) Holmes/Russell/Jossverse fic which is absolutely wonderful, not least because the narration actually sounds like Russell, and Holmes is altogether Himself. I can also attest that the fic works even if, like me, you know hardly anything about the Jossverse, and find vampires in general tedious. (I should also mention, while I'm on the subject, that [livejournal.com profile] jblum and [livejournal.com profile] kateorman's Eighth Doctor BBC novel Vampire Science is dead brilliant and does a lovely job of skewering all those silly Anne Rice-type notions about vampires being Teh Sexx0rs. If you chance to come across a copy, grab it.)

And speaking of Doctor Who, [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4 has made a hilarious fanvid to Weird Al Yankovic's "Your Horoscope For Today", with the most splendid comedic timing. Spoilers for all New Who episodes.

Veering out of fannish territory for the moment, I am addicted to A Standard Christian, a novel being published in blog form, with new chapters on a daily basis. It's real and uncompromising and populated with well-drawn characters, and far from the sanitized, tediously preachy drek that typically passes for "Christian fiction". The heroine's struggles and doubts, and her discoveries about life in the real world after attending a wacked-out fundamentalist Bible college, are fairly and honestly handled, and the author avoids the usual pitfall of making all the professing Christian characters virtuous (or villainous) and all the non-Christian characters villainous (or virtuous). In short, it's a lot like real life. And today's installment made me cry.

Finally, am on the lookout for really good House gen or (non-smutty) hetfic. Recs welcomed.

Oh, dear, it looks like I shall have to go out and buy myself Locked Rooms before I read that. I couldn't afford it last month....

Thanks for the rec! It's been a while since I played in the Russell/Holmes sandbox. I'll probably post the whole thing to my fanfiction page when it's finished.

As for House fic, I haven't come across much gen or hetfic; there are some good writers in the fandom, but they're mostly slashers who hit my smut sunblindness quotient. I'll let you know if I see anything.

One of my favorite House fics is [livejournal.com profile] smittywing's Dysgeusia (http://www.livejournal.com/users/smittywing/166651.html).

You're welcome. It's hard to find quality fic, so I'm glad to help when I can. :)

I also am addicted to A Standard Christian, which I believe I owe to you, as you recced Secret Radio a year or so ago. Many thanks. :)

Also, do you know when Dr. Who is playing on Canadian television in Ontario? I live in Michigan and can get a Canadian channel (sorry, don't remember which one) on cable, and after having seen the episode about the end of the world while flying back from Germany, I think I'd like to see some more.

Thanks, bookaholic!

I'm glad you like the stories. Please don't be shy to recommend both Secret Radio and A Standard Christian to your friends. Bear in mind, there are only four episodes left of A Standard Christian. And then the final book of the trilogy, Grace Triumphant is scheduled to debut in early 2006, Lord willing. I rely on word of mouth for publicity, so I appreciate any recommendations that you pass on. Thanks for reading!

Sorry it took me a while to get back to you on this...

CBC (http://www.cbc.ca/doctorwho/) was showing the series on Tuesday nights for the first run -- now they're showing the repeats Sunday nights at 7 p.m. according to their website. If that's the channel you get, happy viewing!

I stumbled across a repeat this past Sunday on CBC, actually, and am now planning on being a regular viewer. :)
