First Line Lyrics Meme

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] infiniteviking:

Step 1: Put iTunes/your music program of choice on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 25 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.

Rules:
1: No skipping songs because they're embarrassing! (Unless they're just music/a movie)
2: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is cheating!

1. I opened up the pathway of the heart, the flowers died embittered from the start - "I Surrender" by David Sylvian
2. It wasn't rain that washed away, rinsed out the colour of your eyes - "I've Been Losing You" by a-ha
3. Wish you'd never even loved me, it makes it so hard to live without love now - "Wheels" by Lone Justice
4. I never saw sunlight burn as bright, I never felt darkness the way I feel it tonight - "Little Black Heart" by a-ha
5. Opaline through her hair, born on an April tide
6. How did he come here? Who gave him the key? - "A Pagan Place" by The Waterboys
7. Talking about stealing the show, no one would know
8. What did I tell you before when I was up, anxiety was bringing me down - "(All You Do To Me Is) Talk Talk" by Talk Talk
9. Naked girl, don't let the world degrade you - "Bitterness" by the Wild Swans
10. Every day that you pull me under, I don't know what to believe
11. Oh hell, trouble is coming, out here panicking along - "In The Lowlands" by Crowded House

14. The wounds on your hands never seem to heal - "Forbidden Colours" by David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto

17. They've stolen the moon, the magic is gone - "Midnight Sun" by David Sylvian
18. He gambles on the saddle, he's pulling at the mane - "Jean the Birdman" by David Sylvian
19. You said that you would carry the torch - "I Will Not Follow" by The Waterboys
20. The hunted look, the haunted grace, the empty laugh that you cultivate - "Who Do You Think You Are?" by Elvis Costello with the Brodsky Quartet
21. If I could only see straight, I wouldn't be lonely these days - "Bittersweetheart" by Ed Harcourt
22. Ooh, ants in my pants
23. Take a look, ask what it's worth and tell me you're a man
24. Waning moon, harbouring a meadowland, I've been waning too
25. No such thing, I'm sure you've mistaken me

Seriously, the majority of these are so obscure that I will be shocked, I tell you, shocked, if anyone gets more than three. In fact I am so sure that nobody will guess three answers that are not all by the same artist, that I promise to write a ficlet for the fandom/character of your choice (assuming it's a fandom I know about) for anyone who does. That's without Googling, remember...

2. "I've Been Losing You," a-ha

... ummm, that's all I got.

[identity profile] peacockharpy.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
That was my very first concert... *misty*

That reminds me, I need to rip those CDs. :)

[identity profile] penwiper26.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Drawing blanks, unfortunately. But I have a question/request, speaking of music.

Do you happen to have The Secret of Time on file? Because my cassette tape is wearing out and I will not be able to LIVE OMG without "The Secret of Time," "Dear Friend," and "Experience." *clasps hands* Can you help me?

[identity profile] rj-anderson.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
Alas, I do not. I only ever owned the cassette and I haven't had that for years.

I've got "Big Man's Hat" and "Put the Love Back Into Love", but that's it.

[identity profile] kneesroverrated.livejournal.com 2006-04-07 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
If you've got a soundcard that you can connect to a tape player, Audiograbber (http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/) will let you rip wave/mp3 from cassette. Sound quality can be a little dodgy, depending on your equipment and the state of your tapes, but it's better than nothing.

Aw c'mon - it's not THAT hard!

Ladies and gentlemen, my brother Pete, with whom I share a musical brain. Give the man a hand!

#13 - "Solace" by Aha... ?

[identity profile] rj-anderson.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! I knew people would get the a-ha ones...

[identity profile] asphodeline.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Number four looks suspiciously like Lady in eEd - Chris de Burgh - although I shouldn't even admit to recognising it!

[identity profile] rj-anderson.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
EW NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*scrubs eye sockets with brillo pads*

That would only be my MOST HATED SONG OF ALL TIME. And it starts "I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight", so I can see why you might have made the association, but... ech.

[identity profile] asphodeline.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, yes, you're right. I feel good now I coudln't remember the first line!!

18 - Jean the birdman?

[identity profile] rj-anderson.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Well done! I was surprised none of the other Sylvian fans caught it.

#15 A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square
I know Harry Connick Jr. sang this, and I'm pretty sure others did too...I should probably google the original composer at some point.

[identity profile] rj-anderson.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You got it, and it was the Harry Connick Jr. version too! Well done.

12--Sunshine, by my mostest favoritest band of all time, Keane!

Love that song, too. ^_^

ISJ

(Anonymous) 2006-04-06 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
EEK! Only it's not Sunshine!! It's "We Might as Well Be Strangers"!! Sorry, I was taking a random guess off the back of the case...

And may I just say, for one really geeky moment, that the melody line and chord progression at the end of the first verse made me nearly cry the first time I heard the song...

ISJ, embarrassed

[identity profile] rj-anderson.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It is lovely, isn't it? And yes, you were right the second time around. :)

[identity profile] stmarysalice.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll take a stab at this.

#4 "Little Black Heart" (A-Ha)
You say it's getting better you say it's all right But I never felt darkness like I feel it tonight Little Black Heart. I haven't heard that song in ages.

#8 "The Party's Over" (Talk-Talk)? It's been a while but I'm pretty sure that's right.

#17 Midnight Sun (David Sylvian)

That's all I know.

[identity profile] rj-anderson.livejournal.com 2006-04-06 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Fabulous! And for that, you win a fur-lined soap dish ficlet! Just let me know what fandom/characters you'd like to see.

[identity profile] stmarysalice.livejournal.com 2006-04-10 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I won? Let's see, for a ficlet I think I want to see something with the new Doctor Who. You can use which ever characters want to be written, I'm not particular.

(Every time I read or think of a "fur lined soap dish" I have to wipe my hand off because I can feel it and it is just that gross. I'm so glad I didn't actually win one.)

Wow, I don't know any of these! They sound interesting, though -- might check some of them out.

[identity profile] nia-starr.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
*shakes head* I didn't even get a single one on your list! That's ok, I liked the meme so much I grabbed it from you and posted my own! I'm intrigued by all the David Sylvian on your list--you'd recommend him?

[identity profile] rj-anderson.livejournal.com 2006-04-14 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I adore him, but his music is quite unusual and avant-garde at times... I mostly prefer his lyrical stuff, as it tends to be less experimental and more accessible than the instrumental pieces. Though not always.

Secrets of the Beehive and Dead Bees on a Cake are probably his most readily listenable albums.
