So I finally got fed up with the money-grubbing weasels at Bell Canada and decided to switch to another local phone / long distance / DSL provider. Well, the phone part of the switch occurred today and all seems well... except nobody bothered to tell me that as soon as the local phone line switched over, I'd lose my DSL capability until the new company could set me up on their end. Which won't be until Thursday. So guess who's on dialup again?
That wouldn't be so bad, though, if my computer weren't completely freaking out on me at the moment, for reasons I cannot begin to fathom*. Now every time I restart (or, as happens more frequently, crash), I get a "Windows Protection Error" which requires me to restart again before Windows will load. The second time, I get Windows working but the monitor's set back to 16 colours, so I have to fix the monitor settings and then it restarts Windows (just Windows this time, not the whole computer -- small mercies) and finally on the third go, it works.
Until, as happened to me a few minutes ago, the computer inexplicably shuts itself down in the middle of a session. No error messages, no warnings, nothing. Just goes black and then restarts. The last time it happened, I was reading LJ and trying to look at an image in somebody's Flickr account, that was all, so... it's not like I'm trying to run four Adobe programs at once or something.
I think I'll be doing me some backups this week. And probably a lot of house cleaning and organizing. What I will not be doing is spending much time online, at least until Thursday or Friday.
Sigh.
Try not to have too much fun without me, OK?

* Yes, I have an antivirus program. Yes, it is updated and I run it at least once a day. Yes, I have checked for spyware and adware recently, using two different programs, and found nothing. I think my computer is just on its last legs, and there's not much I can do about it, other than watch it sink slowly beneath the virtual waves.
