  1. blue blaze irregulars:
From the 1984 cult SF movie The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension: "At the moment there are no less than 6,000 active Blue Blaze Irregulars world wide - men, women, and children who attend selected symposia at the Banzai Institute, who submit their bodies periodically to rugged physical training at such places as the desert survival school in Nevada, the mountaineering school in Alaska, and a half-dozen others around the globe; who are required yearly to make certain educational advancements; who are "on call" twenty-four hours a day to help B. Banzai in a pinch, or their neighbors in a natural disaster. Blue Blazes are, when all is said, ordinary and yet extraordinary people." Also the name of the BB official fan club, the only fan club I ever joined. The newsletters were a lot of fun, teaching you such things as how to turn a regular tie into a bow tie, and inviting fans to answer the question that New Jersey asks during a run through the Banzai Institute in the movie, "Why is there a watermelon there?"
  2. crowded house:
Neil Finn and the boys. Lovely harmonies, clever lyrics, 'nuff said.
  3. eric weiss:
On the TV show Alias, Weiss is the co-worker and best friend of the heroine's main love interest, and also has a lot of great lines.
  4. harry potter fanfic:
Well, duh. I write the stuff, so presumably I'm interested in it... though admittedly I haven't read very much of other people's fics over the past year or so.
  5. j k rowling:
More on the "well, duh" side.
  6. laurie r. king:
Author of an ongoing series of mystery/suspense novels set in the 1920's, featuring intrepid (though frequently reluctant) scholar/sleuth Mary Russell and her husband Sherlock Holmes (yes, that Holmes).
  7. mystery:
Boy, a lot of these interests are no-brainers. Dorothy Sayers, Margery Allingham, Laurie R. King, Kate Ross, Anne Perry, Elizabeth Peters, etc. I don't care for Agatha Christie at all, however.
  8. plymouth brethren:
The name given to the kind of evangelical Christian church I attend, since the movement began in Plymouth, England and we generally just refer to ourselves as "brethren" to try (albeit unsuccessfully) to avoid sounding like a denomination. Theoretically every PB church is autonomous and answerable only to its own elders and own congregation, although there's a lot of coming and going and shared speakers and influences which leads some people to argue we might as well be a denomination after all (though I personally think that's exaggerated).
  9. talk talk:
Simply the greatest band ever, although you'd be hard pressed to find a lot of songs of theirs -- particularly on their last couple of albums -- that you'd call "catchy" or that could be released as a radio single. They willfully turned their back on commercial success to make music they thought was worthwhile, which drove their record company nuts but produced some really awe-inspiring experimental music. The band parted ways in the early 90's and haven't put out any new material since. Why do I love them so? I'm not even sure, but the raw spiritual passion of their second last album Spirit of Eden never ceases to blow me away.
  10. x-men:
Back in the 80's my brothers collected comics, and eventually ran a comic book store for a while. I read every issue of X-Men and The New Mutants I could get my hands on, and even dressed up as Shadowcat for Halloween one year. My favorite member of the team was always Rogue, though I thought Wolverine pretty cool, too. The movies made my li'l fangirl heart go squee.

From Shawn Abigail's Brethren Helping blog, which keeps track of the post-hurricane rebuilding efforts and needs for help among the believers in Slidell, Louisiana:

This picture speaks for itself, I think.
