The other night three-year-old Nicholas was playing with the baby gym (which a friend of ours borrowed a few months ago and had just returned, so it was like having a new toy again), and when he gave it a thump all the little hanging toys fell down.
"Oh no!" he exclaimed with relish. "It's a calamity!"
Much as it amused me, I couldn't help remembering that I got beaten up in public school on a regular basis for knowing and using "big words" like that. I can only hope Nicholas's eventual schoolmates are more forgiving...
