I'm beginning to wonder if the Hat didn't consider putting Hermione in Slytherin, as well as in Ravenclaw. She can be very ruthless and cunning when she thinks it's needed (As Rita Skeeter could testify, if she wasn't worried about being denounced for spying and unregistered Animagism...)
