Man, am I out of the loop.

So where are the cool kids submitting HP fics these days?

I've done my duty by Fiction Alley, of course, and eventually I'll probably get around to putting this fic up at the Pit of Voles, just for the sake of those who have me on Author Alert. The Sugar Quill is no longer an option, alas, but I'm open to other suggestions as to where I should put this "Secrets and Lies" thing so that people who've read and liked the Darkness and Light trilogy (and hey, even some who haven't) would be likely to see it...

... Why isn't the Sugar Quill an option?

it's very sad, really, but she just *couldn't* be persuaded that the Sugar Quill wasn't the place for her epic Snape/Draco romance.

*runs away before she can be caught*

It's kind of a long story and it's probably best not to get into the details, but several of us who were in the Professor's Bookshelf pulled our fics from SQ after a spate of moderatorial weirdness. I was sorry to have to do that as I used to be a staunch defender of the Quill and proud of being archived there, but I felt that I couldn't go on supporting the site when certain people in authority there were behaving in a way that seemed to me unjust and uncalled-for.

[livejournal.com profile] risti and [livejournal.com profile] lydaclunas probably have the links to the original confuffle on their LJs somewhere.

If you really want the full story, look at my journal archives for October 2005. I still have this icon uploaded, though... The whole thing is really rather messy and quite pointless, but it left an impact on our circle in the fandom, at the very least.

You mean 2004, I think. :)

It starts here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/risti/2004/10/02/) pretty much.

But this summary is brill:

"Do you ever feel like you're back in juinor high, being asked to account for why you told your friend the nasty rumours your other friends were spreading? I guess in some ways, especially amoung us women, we never really leave that phase. We just think of more sophisticated ways of doing it than passing a note in math class, with instructions to make sure a certain person doesn't see it."

Actually, that wasn't the controversy in question: it was later in the month and into November that the confuffle started. I didn't pull my fics from SQ until [livejournal.com profile] lydaclunas and [livejournal.com profile] pharnabazus's fics were suddenly demoted from the Professor's Bookshelf (top-quality fics everybody reads) to the Library (second-tier fics that don't get read as much), apparently solely because they were friends with [livejournal.com profile] risti (who had submitted a perfectly readable, thoroughly betaed fic that got rejected from SQ for reasons which were never made clear) and [livejournal.com profile] narcissam (who had become persona non grata after taking up [livejournal.com profile] risti's cause and questioning the Quill's submission policies).

The whole thing basically boiled down to "Being on the Quill is a special privilege, and if you have the eggs to question anything we do or say or intimate that our policies or moderatorial decisions might ever be unfair -- even if you do so outside the Quill in your own LiveJournal -- we'll toss you out on your ear without notice." Which is, of course, within their rights -- it's their site -- but when this policy is extended to the friends and acquaintances of those so blacklisted, it starts to get more than a little ridiculous... and that's pretty much why I left SQ.

Occlumency (http://occlumency.sycophanthex.com/) seems to be one of the better Snape archives recently.

where are you!!! I have EIGHT PAGES OF HOUSE/CAMERON AND NO SLEEP AND I'M GOING NUTS!

I don't know about "the cool kids," but I rather like The Ink Pen (http://www.theinkpen.net). To be honest, they're still ironing out technical issues and I wouldn't call it a way to get superbly high exposure, but I'm fond of it, like their philosophy (i.e. it doesn't have to be almost-canon but try to reflect on whether it might make JKR wish she hadn't been so nice about fanfic), and hope they'll grow.

Occlumency (http://occlumency.sycophanthex.com/) where yrs trly happens to be a Mod would be very honoured to have it.

It's a Snape centric library of the Sycophant Hex webring. It houses either Snapecentric fics, or Snape/Canon (not Snape/Hermione) and also, the reason this part of the archive was set up: Snape/OFC.

You have to register, but it's pretty easy.

Cool! I've never actually visited SH before -- thought it was SS/HG only. Shows how much I know. :)

People seem to like skyhawke and the archive at the end of the universe.

FA is about to launch a new archiving system so if you're planning to post there any time in the next few weeks, it would be great to test the system with you, as you're one of about 400 authors who predate our second version of the system...

I just submitted the fic this afternoon. Is it too late (or early, I guess)?

I can give you a Skyehawke membership, if you don't have one all ready. It doesn't return a whole lot of feedback, but it's otherwise quite good.
