if you're not going to treat an issue in its entirety, at least acknowledge that what you're writing is incomplete in that respect.

I agree that non-fiction writers should do this, but I think it's much more difficult in fiction, when the author can't just step in and say directly to the reader "yes, I know this is incomplete."
