I had guinea pigs as a child. They are quite smart for rodents, they recognize individual people, and once they get used to the idea many of them are quire snuggly. Ours used to go off like little smoke alarms whose batteries are low every time my mother opened the refrigerator door, because their vegetable scraps were kept in there.
Ditto, ditto, ditto. Actually, I had guinea-pigs until I started graduate school. They're my favourite pets.
