Icon Tutorials?

I've found a couple of good step-by-step tutorials on how to make clear, attractive icons in Photoshop, most notably [livejournal.com profile] isabel0329's, but I still stink when it comes to doing text and I would love to see some more tutorials that deal with this issue. Right now, when I make an icon, it seems to take 2-3 hours on the average, of which I spend about 1/4 of the time on the picture and 3/4 mucking about with the text trying to make it look half-decent. This strikes me as a little excessive. :)

Anyway, if you've come across a decent tutorial in your travels, would you mind sharing the link in the comments? Thanks muchly.

Here's the tutorials in my Photoshop favorites folder:

Saava's tutorial (has some mention of text, but mostly talks about playing with color)

Tigress's manip tutorial (which I refer to because sometimes I make manips and then icon them)

Quebelly's icon brushes and tips

Layrakaye's icon tips (a whole section on text)

Iconmaking 101

Some patterns from Jess79 (which are different from brushes? I think.)

Icon tutorial from Isabel0329 (some mention of text, mostly placement and effects and color)

SV Icon Tips FAQ (text section)

Some of these contradict each other, so I use different ideas depending on which icon I'm making.

You know, I haven't, but I think I'll make one! :) With screenshots and so forth. It would be a really good addition to The Chamber of Icons (http://www.blotts.org/coi).

Thanks for posting about it - you gave me a thing-to-do-other-than-ficbunny!

I can't remember which app you're using, but for PSP (either 7 or 8.1), I make sure to add the text after changing the size of the image (that was a lesson, fershure); and using only the 'fill' colour, or the 'standard text' setting. If you use both colour-selections, I've found it ends up fuzzy, even if you want a two-colour effect.

I also made a sort of sample-sheet of the small fonts I've collected, almost entirely from DaFont.com. It's HTML, if you'd like a copy.

I'm gonna save this post of yours for all the helpful links.... :)

That icon is spiffy and cute and fun.

Look in my memories. I have a bunch of tutorials in there.

I would suggest...

I would suggest my icon community [livejournal.com profile] frosted_pie but I seem to be the only one that posts tutorials.... and mine are pretty basic... some of the people that commented here though make GREAT icons and anything they say I would believe!!
