From a recent interview with Daniel Radcliffe in the British magazine SFX:

"As far as I know, the only person on set who knows something about their character's future--or past, as the case may be--is Alan Rickman. I think [JKR] may have told him something. I don't know what it is, but it's very striking!"

Oh yes - there was something about that when they first started the films a few years ago. He did an interview (it was to plug his stage version of Private Lives but the subject got around to his playing Snape) and he said that he'd taken JKR up on an offer of discussing the character (because he only reads the books when he needs to prepare for the film) and she told him that when he was playing it he needed to bear certain things in mind and apparently he's incorporated those things into his performance.

Apparently she gave Robbie Coltrane a big Hagrid secret as well ...

JKR is obviously a Rickman fan, she is writing extra bits into the Snape role just so that she can have Private Alan chats on the pretence that it will enhance his performance.
