If you love Dorothy L. Sayers in general and Gaudy Night in particular, you must pop over to friede's online gallery and have a look at this. Really, really splendid stuff.
ETA: And then go and leave a comment for her here.
I'm just getting into Sayers--you and Friede and Connie Willis finally convinced me that I really must find out why it is that you like to quote Lord Peter's proposal to Harriet Vane. I checked out a pile of her stuff from the library the other day. But I haven't read it yet, so if you don't mind, where's the best place to start?
I'm butting in to answer that they do go in order. I can't recall the order right now, but it's the order they were published.
That said, I should admit that I read the Vane novels first: Strong Poison, Have His Carcase, Gaudy Night, Busman's Honeymoon. They're my favorites still.
Irrelevant to both this post and my previous comment, you might like to look at the nifty Alias iconage here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/_jems_/54183.html#cutid1

Or you can certainly start with Strong Poison if you're in a hurry for the romance to begin. :)
