"The Abduction" (Alias)
I found last night's episode entertaining on so many levels that it's hard to know where to start...
It seems that
avarill has already said a lot of what I wanted to say (including the highlight of Jack's acid rejoinder to Ariana Kane as the "Best. Comeback. Ever." with which I entirely agree), but I'm going to mention a few things anyway:
- How cute is Marshall? "Cheerio!" I love Marshall. He can't do a British accent for toffee, but I suspect that was the point. (Sydney's inability to do a good British accent is a bit more worrying.) I don't usually enjoy slapstick comedy and I would be worried if Alias started doing it every week, but I have to say I giggled like an idiot through half this episode, thanks to the twisted genius of Kevin Weisman. Hey, if Geek Boy's now got experience outside SD-6 headquarters, does that make him a Field Marshall? Hee.
- Irina, Irina, Irina. She's got eyesight and reflexes sharp enough to snag a fly out of the air... and then she lets it go. I was afraid they were going to show her pulling its wings off or crushing it between her fingers, and then I would have started banging my head on the coffee table. But of course that would have been far too heavy-handed. Did she spare the fly out of compassion? Or just indifference? Then there was the hug in the yard with Sydney, that got the US Marshals all worked up -- terrific gut-punch ending to an emotionally charged scene, reminding us that Irina is still considered a serious threat. And finally, that wonderful, wonderful conversation with Jack about their marriage still being legal. Yep,
avarill, you were right.
- Vaughn and Alice. The reason they're together right now is so totally obvious to me, I almost hope it's not as obvious as I think it is. Maybe I'll just write a fic about it and get it out of my system. But if Vaughn and Syd are so worried about being seen together and so convinced a relationship between them can't possibly work, they might want to do something about those long yearning glances. I actually felt sorry for Will.
- Sark. Personally, I am not a Sark-worshipper -- sure, he's a fun nemesis for Sydney, but that's it as far as I'm concerned. Actually, I thought the gendarme outfit, with that little pillbox hat and the flapping red cape, was pretty hilarious -- like some sort of cruel joke on all the fangirls who were begging to see Sark in uniform. :)
- Faye Dunaway's guest spot as Ariana Kane. I like her about as much as Jack does. But since she's such a wonderful excuse for Jack to bring the snark, I don't mind her hanging around for a few more episodes.
Is it just me, or did there seem to be an awful lot packed into this episode? I felt almost breathless when it was over. And of course, it isn't really over, not for Marshall. Poor woobie Marshall, at the mercy of Mr. Suit and Glasses. Somehow I don't see him fighting his way out of this one...
And now I have to wait until January to find out what happens! Wah!
It seems that
