Mishaps and Misery (a.k.a. the lost Blackadder III episode)

I have just spent the last 48 hours in hospital in another city with my five-year-old son, who broke his upper arm and wrist while bouncing on the bed with his father and brothers.* He's home now with pins and a cast, resting fairly comfortably if still hopped up on codeine, and I'm just hoping that the swelling in his hand and fingers goes down by morning.

Anyway, I am exhausted, but thankful to be home again.

--
* No, he didn't fall off the bed -- that would have been far too ordinary. Instead, he whacked himself in the arm with his own knee. (I hear Douglas Adams once broke his own nose in a similar fashion.)

Oy vey! He nailed his arm with his knee?

[identity profile] penwiper26.livejournal.com 2007-10-04 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, SUCK.

I'm sorry. Poor Simon!

Will keep him (and you) in my prayers.

Mine did it with skates when she was 5 or 6...

Exhausting! But it did hurt her more than me.

Thats one hard knee! Hope you are all feeling better soon. May I suggest full body armour for any further bouncing and wresling games?

I'm so glad you're all home safe -- very scary! They think my daughter's leg broke when she whacked it on a stair (as far as I remember, I didn't land on her -- she was on my lap when I landed, with her legs higher than my butt)...so whacking is dangerous!

Poor kiddo...hope the recovery isn't too hard!

Poor little one! Glad he's home (and you too).

Let me guess: tonight we get a family reading of "No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed"?

Oh, poor little guy! He broke it in two places -- ouch. And he did have to have it "cut open," just as he feared. And poor you!

I hope he calms down soon so his older brother can introduce him to the concept of getting his cast signed. :)

Oh the poor little guy! I hope he mends quickly!

Oh! ouch! I'm glad everyone is back home, though. Praying that the swelling will go down.

Ow, poor little dude. I hope he continues to heal without too much pain.

[identity profile] ljrags.livejournal.com 2007-10-04 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
OUCH! Glad he is home and on the mend! Thoughts and prayers and virtual casseroles are headed your direction.

Oh, what a champion. I hope you're giving him lots of hugs and tsking. ;)

ARGH. Poor kid. Poor you! Hope he heals rapidly.

Oh poor baby. I hope he has a speedy recovery. Make sure to cuddle him for me.

I suddenly feel less clumsy. Thank your son; he's given me confidence ;-)

Have a lovely day! :-)

Poor little guy. Poor Mommy.
Glad you're all home now.

Oh, poor little guy. I can't imagine what it must be like having to watch him go through that. Praying for all of you.

BUMMER!

[identity profile] drmm.livejournal.com 2007-10-04 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch. Poor kiddo. :(

Didn't your older son break his arm as well some time ago?

(My broken nose story -- played on jungle gym, did flip the wrong way, arms went "OW" and hands let go, Michelle fell flat on face. Painful, but no pins or anything, so I'm sure your poor boy hurts worse.

Oh, you poor guys! That knee is a deadly weapon. Maybe it should be registered.

So glad he's home again! Poor kid! How long does he have to carry around hardware inside him?

Get some sleep!

[identity profile] debiwrites.livejournal.com 2007-10-04 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch. I'm glad you're both home and can "rest" (at least try to get some!)

Poor, poor Simon. Two breaks. Jules broke his elbow and his wrist when he was eight, when two boys threw him off his bike for laughs, and it wasn't at all pleasant. I hope Simon recovers quickly.

Are we all sharing zany accident stories? Rough-housing with my brother has caused two notable injuries -- one, the black eye I suffered the day before my First Holy Communion. Picture small!Liz walking up to the altar, all dressed in white with a veil over her fluffy 1990 haircut -- with a beautiful black shiner.

I got my own back, though -- two years later, I was engaged in a very serious tickle-fight with Jules, when I lost control of my tickle and overshot -- and knocked his two front teeth out. It was just weeks before Christmas, but somehow Mum didn't see the funny side. Fortunately, they were just baby teeth...

Ahhh. Poor guy. Hugs and kisses to him! And to you! You are in for a lot of extra work during the healing!

That's an amazingly limber technique. I'm very impressed.

[identity profile] olugbemisola.livejournal.com 2007-10-05 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry! Sending prayers for a smooth, quick recovery -- for everyone.

I broke my wrist trying to be like "snoopy" and do the ice-sliding thing. Who knew that comic strips lied about sliding on ice.

I'll be sure to add your Mite to my god-blesses tonight.

Hope he heals up soon, Rebecca!

Aww! Poor Simon. Children have the oddest accidents. Here's hoping the best for him.

But... bouncing on the bed "with his father and brothers" just makes me smile.
