I have created a monster

So I'm not exactly a rabid American Idol fan, but I've been watching episodes here and there as it gets down to the final few. Anyway, I was trying to explain to my husband what I meant when I said Clay hangs on to his consonants too much*, so I downloaded the video of last week's performance of "Build Me Up, Buttercup" from this site to use as an example.

Well, that would all be fine and good, but I made the mistake of letting Nicholas (my three-year-old) see the video. And the kid got instantly and completely hooked on the song and made me play it again about fifty times.

All of which means, of course, that Clay will be singing "Build Me Up, Buttercup" in my head for approximately the next two weeks. Agh. Why couldn't it be "Solitaire" instead? Not catchy enough for Nicholas, I guess...

*Don't get me wrong, I like Clay a lot. He's my pick to win, in fact. But he still needs to stop over-enunciating his r's.

I'm liking Nicholas more and more. *Evil Laughter*

Oh, does he sing it? That would be adorable...my little guy likes especially the "Viking Song" from Lyle, the Kindly Viking. "Yo Ho!"

Clay, huh? I know what you mean about the R's - but I think that's what makes him sound like Clay.

American Idol gets here a week later than it does in the 'States. :)

Did you ever notice how different they sound when you aren't looking at them? I thought Clay and Ruben were pretty good, but I think I could stand Kimberly the best if she were on radio. I don't think Clay can cut it without his mood lighting. Heh heh.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with enunciating one's consonants per se -- but that's what makes Clay sound like a Broadway performer rather than the pop/rock singer they're looking for.

Kimberly... I dunno. She's good, but nothing about her voice really sounds distinctive or interesting to me. It's like, "Oh, yeah, well, we've got a hundred of those already." I think the reason I like Clay is because his voice is quite different from the modern pop norm. It's like something from a bygone era, as are his mannerisms and his appearance and his whole way of presentation. Of course, that may be the very thing that keeps him from winning in the end...

BTW, I finally answered your question, way back in the original thread. Just so you know. :)
