Yes, there are so many negative and irresponsible things we as writers can say without realizing it, by failing to think through the implications and consequences of what we're asking our readers to see as a "happy ending". Your Oliver Twist example is an excellent one, I think -- Dickens gave his readers what they expected and wanted, but not necessarily what best served the truth of the story. Thanks for your comment (and for your sensitivity in apologizing for digressing from the topic -- I don't mind, but another writer might have and I applaud your awareness of that).
