When my cousin's daughter died I wrote to her saying that I really didn't have any words that seemed right, and she wrote back to say that it was the best letter she had had.

As for "better place", that isn't really the point. Certainly as far as I'm concerned, grief isn't so much about the person dying as the fact that they are missed. There is a hole in the world.
