Also, I've just remembered that The Penderwicks (http://www.jeannebirdsall.com/) (the first book) has a story of the older ones saving the youngest sister, who's 4 or 5, from a bull. So not *totally* irrelevant after all. And it and its sequel would be good books to read to your boys.
