For the record...

And in response to a couple of appalled comments on my previous post, I never suggested Rowan Atkinson should play Snape. I just said that in this particular pic, Rowan Atkinson's hair looked like I think Snape's would if he took proper care of it. Not the same thing. :)

On the other hand, look at the sketch of Snape drawn by J.K. Rowling herself, and tell me that her version doesn't look a lot more like Atkinson than he does like Alan Rickman...?!

LOL! My god, it does look like Atkinson!

Scary, isn't it? I personally try to pretend that sketch doesn't exist. It wounds my sensibilities to think that JKR's mental image of Snape is really that unflattering. :)

Wow, J.K. Rowling is a good artist! Talk about a person with many talents!

Egad--why didn't she give that to Mary GrandPre?? Then the American readers wouldn't have to suffer with Jafar!Snape illustrations.

That is one of the biggest schnozzes I've ever seen. Almost Jimmy Durante-like. LOL

Especially... [waves paws in shaping gestures] around the cheekbones, don't you think?

It's rather not fair she's never drawn Sirius for us... or told us what colour his eyes are.

No, that was me who suggested that. Long time ago. Glad to see you've come around ;o)

Actually, Rowan Atkinson's jolly dishy from certain angles. See series two of Blackadder. But I'm sure there's a part in the later books with his name on it (shame Sirius has been cast already)

I think Rowan Atkinson's quite attractive, myself. And I've long thought he'd make an adequate Snape.

I don't think Atkinson would fit the bill for Sirius really -- it sounds as though Sirius was much more conventionally attractive. But as Erica already knows, I agree with you on the "jolly dishy from certain angles" part -- seeing him with a beard and decent hair in Blackadder II was what first made me go "you know, he's not bad..." and when he showed up as the Ninth Doctor, I lost all my remaining reservations and wibbled.

LOL, you're right, you did -- I'd forgotten!

I was surprised at his appearance in Blackadder II as well, for the same reasons -- the facial hair balanced off his mouth. And when I got my Dr Who tape from Amazon.uk, he was indeed the most wonderful, deep sort of Doctor.

I wouldn't be surprised if you could attribute that to half of Britain growing up on the show and wanting to be part of it (the other half either actually having worked on the show or watching it and not having sufficient imagination).

Actually, that pic of Atkinson rather does look like my idea of Snape -- except Snape looks rather less healthy. Ah well. YMMV.

I rather like the idea of Atkinson as Snape -- he certainly can play the sarcastic bastard with an unholy glee (Blackadder 2, basically), so why not.

Of course, my mental Snape-image seems to reset to Roger Delgado (the original Master) whenever I'm reading the books. Must be the influence of the chapter illustrations.

Rebecca, You certainly didn't suggest Rowan as Snape, my mind just careened there due to your thoughts about the hair. Sorry, didn't mean to blame you for that image overlay!

I've only seen the first couple episodes of Blackadder and gave up with those. Didn't care for it.

If it was Blackadder I, in which he is a hideous buffoon and most of the comedy seems to be slapstick, I don't blame you. But some of the later ones -- I'm especially fond of Blackadder III, which is set during the Regency -- are enormously witty and clever. Mind you, they are also enormously rude in parts, alas, but that's typical of many British comedies, it seems...

Much as I adore Delgado (not just the original, but the best Master), he is so far from the description of Snape we have in canon that yeah, I'd have to say that's a symptom of Creeping GrandPre'ism. :)

It was Blackadder I. Didn't realize the subsequent series were different. Perhaps I'll give the later ones a whirl.
