The Update O' Crushing Guilt, Part I: Play-Doh!

Naomi has asked, rather plaintively (and I can't blame her) if I plan to never blog again. Ouch. Sorry about that. I'd try to reproduce the post Blogger ate two weeks ago, but I've now forgotten everything I wrote in it. Still, I can at least give you guys a status report or something.

But first, a recipe! What could be more fun than a recipe? Well, let me tell you -- the only thing more fun than a recipe is a recipe for homemade Play-Doh! And yes, this stuff is every bit as good as the real thing. You may find imitators out there, but if you want high-quality, all-natural (erm, well, inasmuch as Kool-Aid may be considered natural) playdough that's easy to make, keeps its colour and lasts virtually forever, this is the recipe for you. I made it a couple of days ago with Nicholas and he had great fun pouring in the ingredients. In fact, he's been begging me to make another batch -- but I told him that would have to wait until we moved to the new house (about which I will blog more in Part II).

So, here we are:

BEST PLAYDOUGH RECIPE
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tbsp cream of tartar or alum (this is absolutely essential to the recipe's success, so don't even think of leaving it out)
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 2 cups freshly boiled water
  • 2 packages of Kool-Aid

Stir dry ingredients together. In freshly boiled water dissolve 2 packages of Kool-Aid in the colour/flavour of your choice. Pour hot Kool-Aid onto dry ingredients. DO NOT STIR YET. Add 3 tbsp. of oil -- now you can stir. Test for stickiness. If dough is still sticky, add flour 1/4 cup at a time and knead until no longer sticky. (I usually end up adding 3/4 cup at least.)

Store in airtight container. The fruity smell of the Kool-Aid will dissipate, but the dough will keep indefinitely.

    More to come...
