[livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 has done it again, with a truly stellar series of LOST drabbles -- or rather, a fic in the form of drabbles. See here.

This is actually what I wanted to do -- not with drabbles, but with whole scenes -- for the presently-on-hiatus Snapelets fic. Create a number of set pieces, let the reader fill in the blanks. Only I was trying to span years rather than days and maybe that's where the idea falls down. Won't know until I've finished it, I guess. Whenever that is...
Since I've had a bunch of requests for this now, and since I've decided it really isn't terminally spoilery but more a general indication of The Shape of Things To Come, I'm going to post the fic that I wrote [livejournal.com profile] lizbee for her birthday last year. This is not part of the main Snapelets story; it's more of a sideshow. But it does mention some upcoming incidents in the Snapelets fic, so... be forewarned.

HP: Golden Boy, PG-13 )
Look, now I've done the whole Snape family! )

Albion and Severus were the hardest, because I had to do a lot of manipulation. Severus started with a screencap of John Wood from WarGames, but the changes are significant. Albion, meanwhile, is partially based on an old pic of Simon MacCorkindale, but with completely different hair and a major nose and jawline adjustment. The others are simply pictures of models I found while browsing through various image banks, and tweaked in Photoshop Elements to get the colours and facial proportions right.

I like working this small. It's a very forgiving medium. :)
In response to the overwhelming support for this scene on the poll I ran a couple of weeks ago, it's...

The Birthday Party
In which Malcolm's coming of age goes pear-shaped in several different ways, thanks to the involvement of Albion, Margot, Geoff Weasley, and a girl named Susannah.

If Margot were annoyed, she gave no sign of it. "You'll have to excuse my brother," she said. "Dropping broad hints that I'm a Dark sorceress with ambitions of world domination is one of his few amusements these days."

ETA: Please note that this is not a complete story in itself, but rather a scene from a much longer WiP, and goes along with the four earlier scenes from the same WiP that I've posted in the past.
Snape family dinner party it is.

I am amused by how many people told me to finish Incarnations, seeing as I almost, almost, put that as the last option on the poll. But then I thought, "Heh, I'm sure everybody's forgotten about that one by now, and what's the actual likelihood of me ever working on it again?" so I didn't.

If anybody feels like giving me a really good idea of what should happen next (or soon) in that story, however... be my guest. You never know, it might inspire me. But at this point I think the only way I could get interested again would be if I convinced myself the last three or four seasons of XF never happened...
My first drawing with my new Wacom Graphire 2 tablet -- a bit rough, as I'm just learning all the things it's possible to do with Photoshop Elements, but I'm still quite pleased with it. The thumbnail and description's here:

rj_anderson: (D&L Snape & Maud)
[livejournal.com profile] sabrinanymph recently asked in the comments to this post:

...what's this about a Snapelets fic? How did I miss this, is there anything available currently?

Which made me realize that I've never really posted a coherent message about this particular WiP, I've just gone on merrily assuming people knew about it. But unless you've been following my blog as well as my LJ for quite some time, you probably don't. So, here's the scoop.

Calling this story "the Snapelets fic" is heavily tongue-in-cheek: it makes it sound like a fluffy little piece where Snape and Maud look benignly at their precocious but adorable kids, and make clucking noises over all the naughty but clever things those children have been up to lately. Fortunately for those of my readers not equipped with strong stomachs, or otherwise inclined to seek out fics drenched in syrup, I'm not writing anything of the sort. In fact, it's going to be fairly grim in parts, as those of you who have read Cry might have begun to suspect.

The structure of this story is going to be a bit different from anything else I've written so far: what I'm doing is writing up scenes in pretty much random order, as they occur to me, and then I'm going to piece them together and add connective tissue as necessary. The story covers a significant period of time -- about fifteen years, possibly more -- so I'm just dipping into the Snape family history here and there where it relates to the main plot. That plot being, as it happens, Margot Snape's development from a shrewd and observant young woman into a calculating, iron-willed Evil Overlady who makes Voldemort look, well, about as stupid as he actually was. :)

Anyway, so far I've written four scenes that are publicly available, though a couple of them (especially the first) are noticeably incomplete, and all are sure to be revised when I've got more of the story written. But you can get an idea of what I'm doing by looking at these:

  • The Discovery. While camping in the countryside near his mother's childhood home, ten-year-old Malcolm Snape finds an artifact amid the ruins.
  • The Reunion. At the Hogwarts school reunion, a twentysomething Malcolm witnesses the formation of a dangerous friendship between his sister Margot and a Most Unsuitable Person.
  • The Confrontation. Shortly after the preceding incident, Geoff Weasley demands to know the truth about Margot and her new partner in potential crime, with surprising and unfortunate results.
  • The Library. Near the end of his first year at Hogwarts, Malcolm agonizes over his Potions grade. Fifteen-year-old Margot critiques Voldemort, and expounds on how a Real Leader would operate. Albion, the Snape family's resident Quidditch star, Head Boy, and all-around model of Good Form, is not impressed.

Current scenes in progress include a Snape family dinner party (which I am indebted to [livejournal.com profile] lizbee for suggesting), and a scene very close to the end of the fic in which Geoff's idea of Something Wonderful turns out to be a bad, bad thing for all concerned. There's also a peripherally connected story called "Golden Boy" which I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] lizbee's birthday, since she's a Mad Albion Fangirl. If you've read the other available scenes and decide you'd like to see that one, I'll send the link on request...
  • I actually got something written today. Something new. A scene for one of my long-neglected WiPs. And it rattled off my fingertips so easily, it was like the way writing used to be for me, years ago. Not a long scene, but then it didn't take long to write, either. I'm still shocked that I actually finished a whole scene in less than an hour -- these days it often takes me that long to get through two or three paragraphs.

Anyway, yeah. It's a bit from near the end of the Margot fic, so I can't share it without bombarding you all with spoilers, alas. But I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out.

Next up on the agenda: the Snape family dinner party scene. Or rewriting pretty much the entire first chapter of IWS. However, the Snape & Sydney tag-team fic is probably going to sit on the back burner until the new season of Alias starts. Sorry...
...that I've got this scene from the Snapelets fic (no, it still doesn't have a title, and it waffles back and forth between "the Snapelets fic" and "the Margot fic" depending on the state of my mind at any given moment) that a lot of you haven't seen yet. And since I'm not getting a whole lot else written at present, I figured I might as well toss this one out:

  • The Library

For those who have no idea what all this is about, you can find the previous excerpts from the fic, in no chronological order whatsoever but merely in the order they were written, here:

  • The Discovery

  • The Reunion

  • The Confrontation

There is also a short Albion-centric story I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] lizbee's birthday, but it's kinda spoilerish so I dunno if I want to post the link here. If you are seriously interested in seeing it, though, and don't mind some spoilers for events later in the story, let me know.

Now I'm off to read some more Checkmate...
  • I got this done just barely in time to beat the OotP rush. I suspect that if I'd waited to do it until after the book came out, it would probably never have been posted at all. But upon request, and for whatever it may be worth, here it is:

    40 Things About Maud )

It'll be interesting to see exactly how much of this does turn out to be erroneous or irrelevant once OotP hits the shelves. It will definitely be worth a rueful chuckle if Snape turns out to have a wife tucked away somewhere. (Though given JKR's stated opinion on the subject of Snape and romance, I doubt it.)
...while adding posts to my Memories section -- my apologies to [livejournal.com profile] bluemoon02 for not having seen and answered it before.

Q: Have you written any ficlets about Maud and Snape?

I assume by this you mean "recently", as opposed to all the older stuff that's already archived at Sugar Quill and elsewhere? The answer would be no... although thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lizbee's persistence my next scene for the Margot fic will probably feature the Snape family around the dinner table, and both Snape and Maud will certainly be present at that.

A post-D&L Snape is also featured in my Alias/HP crossover fic, and he may even make an oblique reference to Maud somewhere along the line, but at the moment I can't get him to stop loitering about and chatting with Irina Derevko. *kicks Snape*
I have been using my new Margot Snape icon for a couple of days now, forgetting to mention that the sketch is the work of the inimitable [livejournal.com profile] lizbee. Thanks, Liz!

    rj_anderson: (Snape who me)
Already posted this in [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj's journal, since she was the one who started it all, but since I'm sure most of you will never see it there, here it is:

So naturally his youngest son looked like Harry Potter and made potions like Neville Longbottom. And somewhere, the Fates were laughing.

Which reminds me, there's a new Snapelets cookie that a lot of you have probably not seen yet...
And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] meril for telling me about the wonders of Oekaki. I just know I'm going to be playing with this thing every chance I get. This pic's pretty rough because I was just learning to use the tools, but here it is anyway...

    My first Oekaki drawing.

I really, really feel like writing another scene of my Margot Snape fic (funny how I keep calling it that when Malcolm is the POV character, but, well, that's Margot for you), and I can't because the kids are keeping me too busy.

And of course, by the time the kids are in bed tonight, odds are I won't have the energy or the impulse left to write.

On a completely unrelated note, you can tell that I didn't think much of last week's ALIAS because I haven't made any new icons out of the screencaps. Better luck next week, guys. I hope.
