If you're angsting over it, you're probably doing just fine. :) It's the CE's who blithely assume that if an author puts something in an archaic or unconventional way, it's because they have no idea what they're doing and it's fine to "fix" it in whatever way the CE deems best that drive me wild. Not that this has happened to me (yet), but I have fantasy-writing friends who had to stet hundreds of unnecessary changes by CE's who didn't seem to comprehend genre or narrative voice at all...
